Start with one pair of jeans. Follow its colour backwards and the story quickly leaves fashion. You reach cotton yarn. Dye chemistry. Industrial mills. Synthetic pigment manufacturers. Continue further and you enter another history entirely: plant indigo, farmers, fermentation, textile dyers, colonial plantations, resistance, global trade. Move sideways and the same family of blue opens West African resist textiles and Japanese aizome. Move forward again and indigo returns as premium Japanese denim, raw-jean culture, fashion retail and collecting. Nothing in that network developed in isolation. But the connections are not all the same. Some are direct supply relationships. Some are technological parallels. Some are independent cultural traditions using similar chemistry. Some are later fashion reinterpretations.
