Sneakers, hoodies, collaborations and drop logic entering luxury houses did not simply replace an older system.
Luxury adopted products and cultural practices associated with streetwear, while streetwear brands increasingly used higher pricing, fabrication, scarcity and institutional prestige. The result became hybrid rather than a clean victory of one category over another.
This is contemporary interpretation, so specific causal claims about individual houses or designers need their own evidence. Familiar examples should not substitute for research.
The valuable observation is that categories change when they collide.
Once luxury can sell a sneaker through collaboration logic and a streetwear label can behave like a high-status house, older boundaries stop explaining the market as neatly.
The language of status evolves.
Streetwear did not need to “destroy” luxury to transform what luxury was willing to call desirable — and luxury changed streetwear’s ambitions in return.
