One of sneaker history’s most influential designers did not begin by studying footwear.
HET VERHAAL
Tinker Hatfield’s importance to the Air Jordan story is partly about shoes — but it is also about what happens when one discipline enters another. Hatfield trained in architecture before moving deeper into footwear design at Nike. That background mattered because architecture teaches a designer to think simultaneously about structure, movement, function, materials and the experience of a person moving through space. Those concerns translate surprisingly well to footwear. In the Jordan line, Hatfield repeatedly approached the shoe as more than decoration around an existing sole. Later models incorporated narrative, performance technology and strong visual concepts. The more interesting lesson is not simply “an architect designed sneakers.” It is that expertise from one field can create a different way of seeing another.
