AANLEIDING
A white cotton T-shirt can look like one of the simplest objects in fashion. Its history is anything but simple.
HET VERHAAL
Cotton begins as a plant fibre, but turning that fibre into clothing requires agriculture, cleaning, spinning, weaving or knitting, dyeing, cutting, sewing and distribution. Every stage has changed dramatically across time. Cotton also became entangled with imperial expansion, plantation slavery, industrial machinery and global trade. That means the softness of the finished garment can hide a very hard history. The point is not that every cotton object carries the same story. It is that one fibre can sit inside radically different labour systems, technologies and cultures. The ordinary T-shirt is therefore an excellent MATAGI object: familiar enough to enter easily, deep enough to open an entire world.
