Similar techniques connect Pacific barkcloth traditions, but every island does not call them the same thing or use them the same way.
HET VERHAAL
“Tapa” is useful as a broad connecting term, but it can also hide important differences. Te Papa documents many local names for Pacific barkcloth traditions: siapo in Sāmoa, ngatu in Tonga, masi in Fiji, hiapo in Niue, kapa in Hawai‘i and others. The existence of related material practices does not mean every community uses the same word, process, design or social meaning. That is why World of MATAGI should begin with the local name whenever the specific tradition is known. The broader category can help visitors see relationships across the Pacific, but it should not overwrite the identity of the object in front of them. A deeper layer can then ask how plants, tools, makers, decoration and ceremonial uses differ by place. Those comparisons become valuable only after each tradition has first been described on its own terms. This is a recurring rule for cultural research: connection should add context, not erase precision. The Pacific becomes more interesting when similarity opens multiple doors instead of collapsing them into one aesthetic category.
