Function can become recognizable enough to turn into style.
Waterproof membranes, taped seams, technical zippers, ripstop structures and modular pockets can communicate capability even when the wearer is nowhere near a mountain. Once those construction cues become familiar, engineering begins to operate as visual language.
Contemporary labels and scenes have helped make that transformation visible, but “gorpcore” or technical fashion should not be treated as one clean origin story. Outdoor, military, workwear and fashion systems overlap in different ways.
World of MATAGI can separate two questions. First: what does a construction detail actually do? Second: what does that detail come to signify once it enters fashion?
That distinction protects function from becoming costume. A seam tape may have a technical purpose before it becomes a recognizable aesthetic code.
The same thing happened with workwear: use created forms, then culture gave those forms additional meanings.
Performance can therefore become symbolism without stopping being engineering.
