AANLEIDING
Before it was a hip-hop icon, the adidas Superstar was built for basketball.
HET VERHAAL
The Superstar’s cultural afterlife is so dominant that it is easy to forget what the shoe originally was. adidas introduced the Superstar around 1970 as a basketball shoe, combining a leather upper with the distinctive rubber shell toe that would become its visual signature. Its first identity was therefore performance: durability, protection and the demands of the court. Years later, that same object entered a completely different environment. By the mid-1980s, Run-DMC had made adidas footwear part of their public image. Their relationship with the Superstar helped move the silhouette from sport into street culture, and “My Adidas” turned that relationship into music. The object itself did not need to be redesigned into a “hip-hop shoe.” Culture reassigned its meaning.
