Global history often enters Maluku through European desire for spices. That is not where Malukan history begins or ends.
HET VERHAAL
Maluku is often introduced to global audiences through nutmeg and cloves. That is an entry point, not a complete identity. The region contains many islands, languages, religious histories, forms of adat, music, food traditions, political experiences and diaspora connections. Reducing all of that to “the Spice Islands” repeats the perspective of outsiders who arrived because of commodities. This story is intentionally an editorial principle rather than a factual survey. Each cultural field named here needs its own sources and local context before World of MATAGI turns it into a public claim. The important move is structural: spice history should open doors into the wider world, not close them. For MATAGI, Maluku matters because it is lived culture as well as colonial history. The research system should therefore allow visitors to move from commodity to island, from island to people, from people to diaspora, and from diaspora back into contemporary life.
