Migration can create a route where music, language, fashion and food keep travelling in both directions.

HET VERHAAL

Migration can connect two cities long after the original journey is over. Large-scale Surinamese migration to the Netherlands, especially around independence in 1975, deepened already existing ties between Suriname and Dutch cities. Amsterdam became an important node for Surinamese cultural life. Calling Paramaribo and Amsterdam a cultural corridor is an editorial way of looking at that relationship. It does not mean culture travels in one clean direction. Families, language, music, food, style and memory can move through repeated visits, media, communities and new generations. That makes diaspora different from a one-way departure story. A person can build a life in Amsterdam while family histories, cultural references and relationships continue to connect elsewhere. Later generations can then reinterpret both places from their own position. World of MATAGI should map this as a network rather than a line: people, neighbourhoods, institutions and creative scenes become nodes through which the relationship keeps being remade. The value of the corridor idea is not that every exchange can already be documented. It gives us a structure for asking better questions about what continues to move between the two cities.

WAAROM DIT UITMAAKT

Every world starts with a question
